On October 18, 2023, The Jao Research team held a panel on Publishing in Journals.
We invited Dr. Marta Kobiela (Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University) to join our discussion. We started off our discussion by sharing professors' initial experiences with publishing in journals, and then we discussed the criteria guiding our journal selection process and various strategies and mindsets to deal with rejection, revising & resubmitting manuscripts. This exchange of knowledge and experiences provided us with rich learning opportunities. We have gained valuable insights from each other's journeys in academia. We are looking forward to discussion/learning in our upcoming sessions!

On September 20, 2023, The Jao Research team held the first panel in a new academic year. We are happy to continue our learning sessions! In the 7th learning session, we discussed "Balance" in academic life.
We invited Dr. Dawn Wiseman (School of Education, Bishop’s University), Dr. Lisa Lunney Borden (School of Education, St. Francis Xavier), Dr. Marta Kobiela (Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University), and Dr. Susan Ballinger (Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University) to join our discussion. We shared diverse experiences and practical tips, focusing on maintaining work-life balance, effective writing while managing other commitments, and time management. We extend a warm invitation to more graduate students, not only within our research team but also from outside our immediate circle, to participate in our sessions. We believe this will further enrich our discussions We believe this will further enrich our discussions from diverse perspectives and fresh ideas and provide a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and insights. We received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant (PI: Dr. Limin Jao). This grant's overall objective is to build knowledge and understanding about people, societies, and the world by supporting research excellence in all subject areas eligible for SSHRC funding. We are excited to start a new research project titled "Life in the 'real world': Examining early career secondary mathematics teachers’ experiences and factors affecting use of reform-based teaching approaches." The goal of this study is to systematically explore early career teachers' (ECTs) efforts to teach in reform-based ways by addressing the following research questions: 1. What are the experiences of secondary mathematics ECTs during their first three years in the workplace? 2. How do these experiences influence the adoption of reform-based approaches by ECTs? We are excited to start a new research project titled "Critical making in a research-practice partnership for STEAM innovation". We received the McGill Faculty of Education’s Innovative Education Project Grant which is supported by La Caisse Desjardins de l'Éducation. This grant's overall objective is to expand or strengthen the Faculty’s existing network of partners, develop professional learning communities, and help close the gap between research and practice and address the emergent educational gap that has been widened by the pandemic’s impact on student learning. About this project:
Since 2017, Trafalgar School (Traf), DISE (Dr. Limin Jao, PI), and the School of Education at Bishop’s (Dr. Dawn Wiseman, Co-applicant, Traf alum) have engaged in a research-practice partnership on Cycle 1 STEAM teaching and learning (T&L). Our partnership focuses on community collaboration, student-directed T&L, and the interdisciplinary understandings that arise when students focus on issues of interest to them (Jao et al., 2023; Wiseman et al., 2020). Our overarching question is: How might student-directed T&L foster change in practice? Each year, students select a focus for their learning (e.g., 2017-18: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women; 2022-23: Escape rooms), as do the teachers (e.g., 2017-18: Teacher questioning; 2022- 23: Assessment). Each year, the teacher focus builds from previous learning. By documenting this process, we are developing a model for successful change in practice over time. For 2023-24, teachers will explore critical making (Ratto, 2011), a pedagogical practice focused on problem solving through creation that opens up “critical social reflection” (Hertz, n.d., para. 1). The focus emerges from students’ ongoing interest in social/ecological justice, will expand the collaborative interdisciplinary assessment supported by our 2022-23 IEPG, and allows for exploration of the driving question for Year 7: How does critical making support cross-curricular competency development in STEAM? Our objectives for this grant are:

On May 27 - June 1 , 2023, some members of our team presented at the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) Conference, in Toronto, Canada. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PRESENTERS!
Congratulations to Maria-Josée Bran Lopez for receiving the Doctoral award for studies in education!
This award (funded by the Quebec government) recognizes and values doctoral students in educational sciences who are conducting research in pedagogy and teacher training, with special attention to classroom interactions. On April 13-16, 2023, some members of our team presented at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Conference. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PRESENTERS!
